Welcome to Eye Care Associates of Sarasota!
Eye Care Associates of Sarasota was founded by L.D. Perry, MD in 1985.
Dr. Thomas Schwartz joined the practice in 1992 providing care for corneal & external eye disease as well as general eye health care.
Our office prides itself on providing our patients with personalized, outstanding care. We understand that all of our patients are individuals, each with their own set of problems, questions and concerns. So we don’t use a ‘cookie cutter’ approach, the services and recommendations we give are based on each individual’s medical findings. We will never ‘sell’ you services that are not right for you, nor recommend any procedure or service which is not in your best interest. We want you to leave our office well informed of your situation and understanding the realistic options you have.

Services
Examinations for General Eye Health
What is a comprehensive dilated eye exam? You may think your eyes are healthy, but visiting an eye care professional for a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to really be sure. During the exam, each eye is closely inspected for signs of common vision problems and eye diseases, many of which have no early warning signs. Annual comprehensive dilated eye exams are generally recommended starting at age 60. It’s also especially important for people with diabetes to have a comprehensive dilated exam at least once a year.
Cataract Surgery with Premium Intraocular Lens Options
In cataract surgery, the lens inside your eye that has become cloudy is removed and replaced with an artificial lens (called an intraocular lens, or IOL) to restore clear vision.
Corneal Transplants
Corneal transplantation is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue
Treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eyes is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. Dry eyes can have no symptoms, it can also be a debilitating disease that can cause permanent corneal damage.
Ocular Surface Disease and Oncology
Pigmented lesions that arise from the conjunctiva include nevus, complexion-associated melanosis (CAM), primary acquired melanosis (PAM), and malignant melanoma.1,2
Pterygium Removal
Pterygium is a raised, fleshy, triangular-shaped growth that starts in the corner of your eye. Long-term exposure to UV light is the main cause. It may not cause symptoms, but sometimes, it can irritate your eye, and if it grows too much, it can affect your vision. Treatments include eye drops and surgery, if necessary.
Herpes Complications
Ocular herpes zoster, also known as herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO), is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, leading to painful rashes and potential vision complications.

INSURANCE
At Eye Care Associates of Sarasota, our patients are at the center of everything we do and your trust is very important to us. Sharing information is one way that ensures we continue to be trusted partners for your eye health needs. We want to inform you of some changes that will be taking place and the reasons behind these changes.
As of January 1, 2025 we no longer take Medicare Advantage plans of any kind. We will continue to accept Traditional Medicare with or without a secondary plan. If you have a Medicare Replacement plan we can still see you. You will have to pay the Medicare allowable rate for our services then you can submit the paperwork to your plan for reimbursement.
Many retirees who enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan do so for the low-cost premiums and “extra benefits” they are promised. A sizable percentage of those retirees do not understand that they are signing over their Medicare benefits for Parts A & B to a private insurance company.
Medicare advantage plans are not Medicare. These are private insurance companies who are paid a set amount by Centers for Medicare Services for each patient they enroll. The more people these private insurers sign up the more money they make from Medicare. Unfortunately, these companies do not pay physicians the same as Medicare would. The “extra benefits” these plans promise are paid for with additional co-insurance charges or denials for other care.
We are sorry for any inconvenience these changes may cause you. We appreciate your faith and trust in us and thank you for the opportunity to serve your healthcare needs.
